Section 504 is part of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 that prohibits discrimination based upon disability.

Section 504 is an anti-discrimination civil rights statute that requires the needs of students with disabilities to be met as adequately as the needs of the non-disabled are met.  This federal civil rights law is designed to protect the rights of individuals with disabilities in programs and activities that receive federal funding.

Each of our district campuses has a 504 coordinator able to assist students and families.

Section 504 eligibility is determined through a team conversation by a review of existing data that considers the following criteria:

    • Does the student have a mental or physical impairment, have a record of such an impairment, or regarded as having such an impairment?
    • Does the impairment impact major life activities or major bodily functions, regardless of whether or not the student has any mitigating measures in place?
    • Does the impairment substantially limit a major life activity or major bodily function when compared to how the average, non-disabled student performs in the same major life activity?
