Understanding Data and Personally Identifiable Information (PII)
In today’s digital world, data refers to any information that is collected, stored, and used electronically. This can range from general usage statistics of online tools to detailed information about individual students and staff. Managing this data responsibly is essential to creating a safe, personalized, and supportive educational environment.
One critical type of data is Personally Identifiable Information (PII). PII includes any information that can be used—on its own or when combined with other data—to identify a specific individual.
Examples of PII include (but are not limited to):
-
Full names
-
Student or staff ID numbers
-
Email addresses
-
Home or mailing addresses
-
Phone numbers
-
Dates of birth
-
Participation in school-sponsored activities or sports
-
Educational records
It’s important to recognize that even pieces of information that seem harmless on their own can become identifying when combined with other data. That’s why protecting PII is a top priority.
Our district is committed to managing all data, especially PII, with the highest level of care. We follow all applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies to ensure the privacy and security of our students, staff, and families.
